While not an official Disneyland event, Gay Days Anaheim has been held at the park since 1998, and the Gay Days website states that "Disney has been wonderfully supportive of the event, especially as it has grown." Gay Days Anaheim attracts more than 30,000 red shirt-wearing guests every year during a fun-filled weekend of activities inside and outside the park. In the years that followed, unofficial "Gay Days" events sprung up, taking place at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. A Disney spokesperson at the time said same-sex dancing was prohibited, in part, because "some patrons might have found dance partners of the same sex offensive," according to the Los Angeles Times. However, it was strictly enforced until 1985, a year after Disney lost a lawsuit brought by a male guest who was forced to leave the park for refusing to stop dancing with a male partner. In fairness, this policy was enacted back in 1957, two years after the park opened. Not long ago, it wasn't common to find rainbow ears and inclusivity in Disney parks.īy signing up, you will receive newsletters and promotional content and agree to our Terms of Use and acknowledge the data practices in our Privacy Policy. Disney's history with LGBTQ+ representation The truth is, this moment was a long time coming. However, others recognize the event as a monumental step forward in the company's support for the LGBTQ+ community - especially amid the political turmoil Disney currently faces in Florida regarding the state's Parental Rights in Education legislation. Some could view it as just another ticketed party that brings in cash. "Disney has plenty of shows on Disney+ with queer characters, and I'd love to see them showcase characters and stars from some of those shows," Mertzman added. Mertzman is attending the event with her wife and two children. And I'm really looking forward to seeing the characters in their Pride costumes and finding out which characters they bring out for the event," Allison Mertzman of Los Angeles said. "I love the treats, so I'm pretty excited about the food. Disneyland After Dark: Pride Nite joins a growing list of all-ages, after-hours events held at the Southern California theme park, including Star Wars Nite and Throwback Nite. On April 13, Disneyland announced it will host its first-ever official Pride events this June during Pride Month. However, the official in-park representation of LGBTQ+ guests generally stopped with shirts, hats and cupcakes. Unofficial "Gay Days" in the park have happened for decades. Like the aliens themselves say: “ Oooooh!”įinally, there was also a pin featuring BB-8, looking dazzling in glittery rainbow shades and rolling above the slogan “Belong, Believe, Be Proud.” We agree, BB-8!Įach of these pin sets cost $17.99, and we found them at the Pin Traders store in Epcot. If you've visited Disneyland in recent years, you've likely seen rainbow-hued pride merchandise like Minnie Mouse ears, T-shirts, pins and Mickey Mouse plush animals.ĭuring Pride Month, you may have spotted what looked like celebratory pride-themed treats such as rainbow layer cakes and cookies covered in colorful sprinkles, but until last year, this was largely referred to as a "Rainbow Collection" and not expressly labeled as pride-related, despite the implied connotations. The Pixar pin features a rainbow Green Alien, on a button-style background with “Pixar Animation” spelled out around the edges. If this set isn’t motivational, we don’t know what is!Īs well as this Marvel set, we also spotted two other Pride pins, one representing Pixar, and the other Star Wars. Printed in bold, rainbow ink on the black card are six very powerful and heroic virtues to remember during Pride month and beyond: Power, Heroic, Courage, Strong, Protect, and Bold. The thing that really sets this pin set apart is the card the pins are displayed on. Each pin depicts a different Marvel hero logo, dazzling in colored glitter against a black background. This Marvel Pride set includes six pins, all different colors of the rainbow. This first set is my personal favorite, and it’s a powerful one indeed! Over in Epcot, three new pin sets have just arrived, bringing Pride positivity with them. You can check out more of the magical, rainbow-filled collection here, but we’re here today to talk about pins! To get ready for this wonderful celebration, Disney have released a stunning new collection of Pride merchandise, and have pledged to donate all the funds raised from these sales to LGBTQIA+ charities throughout the month ahead. Pride Month takes place every June, and I for one can’t wait to share my support for love and equality in the Disney parks!
